Lagos Govt Shuts Down Popular Market In Yaba

The Lagos State government has shut down the popular Alamutu market and destroyed makeshift structures obstructing traffic movement along railway corridors in Yaba.

Naija News reports that the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known on Tuesday through his official X handle.

Wahab said the Lagos Waste Management Authority officials and the state’s Environmental Sanitation Corps officials sealed the Alamutu market at Idioro Mushin over poor sanitary conditions.

He wrote: “On my directives, @Lawma_gov earlier today (3rd of October) sealed up Alamutu (Ologede) market at Idioro, Mushin due to its poor sanitary conditions and inefficient waste disposal practices.

“LAWMA (@Lawma_gov) alongside KAI operatives (@LAGESCOfficial) early Tuesday dislodged street traders operating along the Railway Corridor at Yaba to ease traffic movement.”

Meanwhile, Tokunbo Wahab had last week ordered the immediate closure of Ladipo and Mushin markets for several environmental offences, including reckless waste disposal, unclean premises, and non-payment of waste bills.

Naija News learnt that the market would remain closed until the traders and market stakeholders met the mandatory redress conditions.

The Commissioner noted that the decision was part of ongoing efforts at instilling compliance in markets around the state, stressing that the critical importance of environmental hygiene in markets cannot be neglected.

According to him, the state government is fully committed to collaborating with market stakeholders to facilitate necessary adjustments and improvements to enable them to meet required environmental standards.
